Introduction (10 minutes)

  • Teach or review what a noun is by watching the video or reading the book aloud If You Were a Noun.
  • Tell students that today they’re going to identify proper nouns and learn to use them in their writing.

Explicit Instruction/Teacher Modeling (10 minutes)

  • Write the following sentence on the board: «On Thursday Nyla was back at Railroad Park.»
  • Tell students that «Nyla» is a girl’s name, «Thursday» is the name of a day of the week and «Railroad Park» is the name of a park.
  • Explain to your students that proper nouns are names of important people, places, and things. Proper nouns begin with capital letters and include the days of the week, months of the year, and holidays.
  • Write more sentences on the board that include proper nouns and continue modeling which noun are proper nouns are by underlining them.

Guided Practice/Interactive Modeling (10 minutes)

  • Write the words «teacher» and «Mr. Lee» on the board.
  • Point to each word as you read it.
  • Ask children to identify the proper noun.
  • Ask a volunteer to explain why «Mr. Lee» is a proper noun.
  • Write the common nouns «doctor,» «friend,» «principal,» and «state.»
  • Have children provide a proper noun for their doctor, friend, principal, and city.
  • Remind students to begin each proper noun with a capital letter.
