Work in Pairs
Teaching the Class (before the handouts)
You can use the flashcards at the end of this lesson to elicit and check your students’ understanding of the vocabulary and target structure.
After you’ve gone over the vocabulary and target structure, hand out the worksheets. Write all the new words and phrases on the board and have your students copy them down on pages 1 and 2. (They should write the new words below each image on page 1, and the new phrases on page 2.)
Put the students in pairs and have them ask each other about the sports each character used to play, and which sports they play now.
Now Work Alone
When they are finished the pair work, have your students try the follow-up activity to review their writing skills for this structure. (Make sure they are not doing the follow-up activity and pair work activity at the same time. These are meant to be done separately.)
Survey
Have students fill out the survey about themselves. Then put
the students into pairs and have them fill in the survey with their partners’ answers. Next, have them write sentences with used to from the information they’ve gathered. As a follow-up activity, you could ask each student to briefly report to the class on what their partner used to do and does now.
Writing
Assign this writing task in class or for homework. Encourage students to use used to as often as possible. Students can then read each other’s paragraphs, or you can have students read out their paragraphs in front of the class as a mini-presentation.
